The Hospital Bag – What to Pack for Labour and Birth

As your due date approaches, there are so many things to think about and prepare for. One of them is packing your hospital bag. To make things a little easier, we're sharing a list of essentials that we found especially helpful when preparing for the arrival of our own little ones.

As facilities and supplies vary between birth centres and hospitals, it's always a good idea to check what will be provided and what you'll need to bring yourself. We also recommend having your bag packed well in advance, even if you're planning a home birth, just in case plans change and you need to head to the hospital unexpectedly.

So, what should you pack in your hospital bag? We've put together a list of our favourite essentials and a few thoughtful extras to help you feel prepared for the journey ahead.

For Your Baby

  • Baby clothes: 3 bodysuits, 2 sleepsuits and 2 pairs of socks. We recommend choosing soft, comfortable clothing made from natural fibres, such as GOTS-certified organic cotton or merino wool.
  • A going-home outfit: A knitted hat, cardigan, mittens, socks and trousers make a lovely little outfit for the journey home.
  • Nappies.
  • Baby wipes.
  • Baby Bottom Charm for your baby's delicate nappy area.
  • Muslin cloths.
  • A dummy, if you plan to use one.
  • A soft baby blanket.
  • An infant car seat for the journey home.

For Mum

Giving birth and adjusting to those first few days with a newborn is an incredible experience, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding. That's why it's worth packing a few things that will help you feel as comfortable, cared for and supported as possible.

Clothing:

  • Disposable mesh underwear and maternity pads suitable for postpartum recovery.
  • Nursing bras or breastfeeding tops, if you're planning to breastfeed.
  • Breast pads.
  • Comfortable pyjamas or soft, cosy loungewear.
  • A spare change of clothes in case of leaks or bleeding.
  • Slippers and comfortable socks.
  • A soft, comfortable outfit to wear home.

Toiletries & Other Essentials:

  • A reusable water bottle.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Hairbrush, hair ties and a hair clip.
  • Shampoo and conditioner.
  • Your favourite toiletries, such as facial moisturiser, lip balm, cotton buds and deodorant.
  • A peri bottle to make cleansing more comfortable after birth.

In the early days of breastfeeding, nipples can become particularly sensitive and tender. Wound Charm is one of our favourite little essentials for helping to nourish and soften delicate skin, offering some extra care when it's needed most.

For Your Partner or Birth Support Person

Your partner or chosen birth companion plays an important role during labour and birth, so it's worth making sure they have a few essentials packed too.

  • A comfortable change of clothes.
  • Slippers.
  • Basic toiletries, such as deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • A phone and charger, ideally with an extra-long cable.
  • Plenty of nourishing, energy-boosting snacks for both of you. Labour can take time, and having something to keep your energy levels up can make all the difference.

A Few Little Extras for a More Comfortable Birth Experience

The following items aren't essential, but they can help create a calmer, more comforting atmosphere and make your birth experience that little bit more special.

  • A camera or phone to capture those unforgettable first moments.
  • A portable speaker and a favourite playlist.
  • Hand sanitiser.
  • Lavender spray, peppermint spray or a gentle room mist.
  • A soft bathrobe.
  • A bikini or swim top if you'd prefer to wear something in the birthing pool or bath.
  • Swimwear for your partner.
  • Chewing gum.
  • A nursing pillow.
  • A birthing ball, if one isn't available where you're giving birth.
  • A hair comb to squeeze in the palm of your hand during contractions. Some women find that the pressure helps them cope with labour sensations.
  • A TENS machine, which can be hired to help with pain relief during contractions.
  • A soothing massage balm.

The Comfort of Massage During Labour

During labour, the simplest touch can sometimes bring the greatest comfort. A warm hand resting on your back or firm, steady pressure on your hips may offer welcome relief in the middle of a contraction.

Massage can also be a beautiful way for your partner or birth companion to offer reassurance, closeness and support throughout the birthing experience.

We wholeheartedly recommend packing Muscle- and joint Charm in your hospital bag. It's one of our favourite balms for massaging tired, aching muscles, particularly around the hips, back and shoulders.

Of course, every woman is different, and what feels comforting during labour is deeply personal. Some love being touched and massaged, while others prefer quiet, space and as little physical contact as possible.

There is no right or wrong way to experience birth. What matters most is listening to your body, trusting your instincts and honouring what feels right for you in each moment.

A Final Thought – Your Bag, Your Birth

There will probably be a few things on this list that you won't need, and perhaps others that feel absolutely essential to you.

The truth is, your hospital bag doesn't have to be perfect. It's simply there to hold the little things that bring you comfort, help you feel prepared and support you through one of life's most extraordinary experiences.

We hope this list makes preparing for your baby's arrival a little easier and brings you some peace of mind as the big day approaches.

From all of us at Villimey, we're wishing you a beautiful birth experience and all the very best as you begin this wonderful new chapter🤍
